Welcomes ’07 Ridgeback Hockey Recruits
Oshawa,
ON – It is with great pleasure that the department
of athletics and recreation welcomes Derrick Bagshaw and
Justin Allen to the UOIT Ridgebacks varsity men’s
hockey program.
 Bagshaw
is playing this year in the OHL with the Erie Otters; he
brings a big presence to the blue line and will be counted
on to lead with his experience as he currently is doing
in the OHL. With
Allen the Ridgebacks are getting a strong winger who will
challenge for every puck. He is a strong player in the corners,
the ability to create many scoring chances, and can make
opposing teams work extremely hard to contain him in the
offensive zone. The Ridgebacks have had a great recruiting
season so far and continue to build their program  for
the first season in the OUA. It is a very historic and exciting
time for one to think that this September will see University
hockey in the Durham region for the very first time.
“For
the athletes, playing for the Ridgebacks in the first ever
season next fall is a once in a life time opportunity. Very
few athletes will be able to say they were the first to
ever wear the varsity jersey. These athletes are apart of
UOIT’s quest to bring a championship home to UOIT
and the Durham Region” stated Marlin Muylaert, Head
coach of the Ridgebacks hockey program.
The
Ridgebacks will be playing out of the Campus Ice Centre,
our brand new NHL twin pad ice arena on campus. The ice
centre has capacity for 750 fans in addition to a great
view of the games from Shagwell’s Restaurant which
looks over both of the rinks.
