York Roars Against the Ridgebacks in their Regular Season Finale
North York (OUA) – The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team allowed four first period goals in their regular season finale as the York University Lions cruised to a 7-2 in North York on Sunday afternoon.
The Ridgebacks wrapped up their inaugural OUA season with a record of 1-22-2-2. The game was a must-win situation for the York Lions (11-11-3-1) as they were able to wrap up their first playoff berth in five years.
The Lions found their scoring touch in the first period, scoring four goals on twelve shots, two of which were shorthanded. With the score 1-0 in favour for York, the Ridgebacks looked to even up the score as they received a power play. York had a different plan as Courtney Unruh managed to score a shorthanded goal. This spurted the Lions offence as they netted two more goals in the next four minutes, including Unruh recording her second shorthanded goal to take 4-0 lead.
UOIT managed to cut into the lead by the period’s end as Katie Grant (Oshawa, ON) scored her second goal of the year. The power play goal was assisted by Morgan Mitchell (Peterborough, ON) at the 14:41 mark.
The teams traded goals early in the second period, giving the Lions a 5-2 lead. Melissa Findlay (Oshawa, ON) scored the Ridgebacks second power play goal of the game with an assist going to Megan Friel (Pickering, ON).
York managed to register the next two goals in the game late stages of the second period to close out scoring in the game, going on to win by a final score of 7-2.
Carleigh Taggart (Oshawa, ON) got the start in net for UOIT, managing to make 32 saves in the loss. Megan Slumskie was between the pipes for York and had an impressive outing making 26 saves on 28 UOIT shots. A bright spot for the Ridgebacks was their play with a man short as they shutout the Lions on six power play attempts. They also score twice with the man advantage going 2-for-10, but allowed two shorthanded markers in the first period.
The Ridgebacks experienced growing pains during their inaugural OUA season, only registering one win on the year. The team managed to skate stride for stride with all of the teams in the league but when games within striking distance, the Ridgebacks had trouble finding the back of the net, finishing the year averaging less than two goals per game.
