Ridgebacks Goalie Named “This Week’s” Athlete of the Week

Oshawa (OUA) – UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey goaltender Matt Mateja has been named Durham Region’s Top Athlete for the week of February 5, 2008. Athletes across the Durham Region are honoured by the Metroland Media Group which includes community newspapers such as the Oshawa This Week, Whitby This Week, Clarington This Week and the Port Perry Star as well as the popular website www.durhamregion.com.

The caption in the newspaper is as follows: “Goalie Matt Mateja made 16 saves in the third period and 40 all told to lead the UOIT Ridgebacks to their first-ever shutout in OUA men’s hockey action on the weekend. The first-year Ridgebacks improved to 5-18-3 with a 4-0 win over the York Lions, who went in with a six-game win streak.”

Mateja (Mississauga, ON) has appeared 22 of the Ridgebacks 26 games this season. He has started in net for all five wins on the year posting a 4.53 GAA with an .880 save percentage.

The Ridgebacks will play their final home game of the year tonight at the Campus Ice Centre in a rematch against the York Lions. Puck drop is at 7:30 pm. The first 100 fans wearing Ridgeback Blue will receive noise makers and one lucky student will win a $1,000 bursary.
