UOIT Ends Season on a Sour Note After Being Shutout in Guelph

Guelph (OUA) – After skating to a scoreless draw after two periods, the University of Guelph Gryhons scored three third period goals to shutout the UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team 3-0 on Saturday night.

UOIT head coach Marlin Muylaert’s team came up short in all three games against his former club as the Gryphons swept the season series 3-0 over the Ridgebacks.

In their inaugural OUA season, the Ridgebacks finished the year with a 6-19-3 record and ended up in eighth place in the Western Conference standings. Guelph ended their season in seventh place with a record of 12-13-3, also missing out on the OUA playoffs.

Both teams played evenly throughout the first two periods, with goaltenders Matt Mateja (Mississauga, ON) of UOIT and Adam Jennings of Guelph stopping everything that the teams threw at them. Mateja made 16 stops in the first two periods while Jennings recorded 12.

Playing their second game in as many nights, the Ridgebacks looked to have run out of gas in the third period as Guelph netted three goals on 16 shots, going on to win by a score of 3-0. Matt Willoughby and Barrett Brook of the Gryphons recorded two points a piece in the win. UOIT allowed Guelph to score on the power play, at even strength and even shorthanded in the period.

Guelph finished 1-for-6 on the power play while UOIT was 0-for-7. Guelph recorded 32 shots compared to 19 by UOIT.

Goal scoring has been an issue for UOIT closing out the stretch as they were shutout in three of their last five games. The two games in which the Ridgebacks were not shutout resulted their first back-to-back wins of the season, defeating York in both games.

The Ridgebacks were streaky in the 2008 portion of the season, going 4-8 in the calendar year. The team also recorded significant milestones in the final weeks of the season as they registered their first shutout and back-to-back wins in the programs history.
