Ridgebacks Come Up Short In Final Home Game of the Season

Oshawa (OUA) – The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team failed to register a win at home during their inaugural OUA season as they fell 4-1 to the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon in their final game at the Campus Ice Centre of 2007-08.

The Ridgebacks fall to 1-21-2-2 on the year with a 0-11-1-1 record at home. The Badgers finish their regular season with a 7-13-7-0 record and sit in seventh place, one spot out of a playoff position.

The teams traded goals in the first period, with Melissa Bell (Cobourg, ON) of the Ridgebacks picking up her fourth goal of the year. Carling Jeyes (Little Britain, ON) and Kathleen Edwards (
Whitby, ON) picked up assists on the play. UOIT ran into penalty trouble, committing four minor penalties in the period but goaltender Melissa Scott (Oshawa, ON) made eleven saves to keep the game level at 1-1.

The Badgers managed to take a one goal lead late in the second period as Maggie Young netted her second goal of the season beating Scott on a one-timer. For the second consecutive game, the Ridgebacks entered the third period trailing by a single goal, within striking distance of their opponent.

On their ninth power play of the game early in the final frame, the Badgers added to their lead as Courtney Sutherland scored her second goal of the game at the 2:44 minute mark. On the man advantage at midway through the period, Brock would add one more goal to secure the 4-1 victory.

This marked the third consecutive home game that final score resulted in 4-1 win for the road team. Brock finishes the season series with a 2-0-1-0 against the Ridgebacks. The game also marked Brock’s first visit to the Campus Ice Centre.

Penalties were an issue for the Ridgebacks on the night as Brock capitalized on 2-of-10 power play attempts. UOIT’s lone goal was on the power play as they finished 1-for-5. The Badgers out shot UOIT 34-27, with Scott making 30 saves in a losing effort.

One game remains on the schedule for the Ridgebacks in their season as they travel to
North York to take on the York University Lions (10-11-3-1) on Sunday afternoon (2:00 pm). York is 2-0 against UOIT this season, with their last meeting resulting in a 4-3 overtime victory.
