jan 12 - whock

Oshawa (OUA) – The UOIT Ridgebacks women's hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision to the University of Guelph on Saturday night in Oshawa. The Ridgebacks fall to 1-16-1-2 in OUA action while the No. 8 ranked Gryphons improve to 13-5-0-0. UOIT will have their chance at redemption on Sunday afternoon as the teams square off for their fourth meeting of the season at the Campus Ice Centre. Face off is scheduled for 1:30 pm.

Founding UOIT President Gary Polonsky dropped the puck for the ceremonial face-off with the two captains before the game in part of Gary Polonsky Appreciation Day at the Campus Ice Centre.

In first period action, the Gryphons controlled the majority of the play, out shooting the Ridgebacks 17-7. UOIT starting goalie Carleigh Taggart (Oshawa, ON) made a number of breathtaking saves but Guelph eventually opened up scoring at the 11:42 minute mark as Carrie Tokarcyzk scored her second goal of the year, giving the Gryphons a 1-0 lead.

Continuing to apply offensive pressure in the second period, Guelph forced the Ridgebacks to take some undisciplined penalties. Guelph capitalized on their sixth power play attempt as defender Carla D’Angelo scored to give the Gryphons a 2-0 lead.

In the third, the Ridgebacks had a number of chances to get within striking distance as they threw nine shots at the net, but were unable beat Guelph goaltender Sarah Long on the night. Jennifer Rivers, the OUA fifth leading scorer, put the game on ice at the 6:34 mark of the third as she recorded her 13th goal of the year.

Long totaled 22 saves in the game for the shutout, her second of the year. Taggart recorded a whopping 46 saves while allowing only three goals in a losing effort.

The rematch between the Ridgebacks and Gryphons will go on Sunday afternoon at the Campus Ice Centre in Oshawa. KX96 2007 Super Star Contest winner Michelle Boudrias will be singing the national anthem. Puck drop is scheduled for 1:30 pm.

The Ridgebacks will also be out and about in the community as they will make an appearance at the Oshawa Centre along with members of the Durham Lords from January 18-19. Fans in attendance will have the opportunity to win free tickets to an upcoming game and get autographs from the players (10:00 am to 2:00 pm on both days). Hunter the Ridgeback will also be in attendance!
