Wild Night at the Campus Ice Centre as the RIdgebacks Skate Away With a Tie

Carling JeyesOshawa (OUA) – The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team skated to a 3-3 draw with the Queen’s University Golden Gaels on Saturday night. UOIT held a pair leads throughout the course of the game but were unable to hold off the visiting Golden Gaels as they found a way to find tie up the score, preventing the Ridgebacks from earning their first win on home ice in their inaugural season.

The tie marked the Ridgebacks sixth point of the season as they hold a 1-17-2-2 record. Waterloo is 8-8-6-0 on the season and sit in fifth spot in the OUA standings.

After finding themselves down by a goal after one period, the Ridgebacks scored two second period markers to give them their first lead of the game. A pair of local athletes scored for UOIT as Melissa Findlay (Oshawa, ON) found the back of the net at the 10:37 mark of the second period while Cheri Ostroskie (Oshawa, ON) gave the Ridgebacks the lead three minutes later. The lead did not last for long as Queen’s tied up the game with less than two minutes remaining in the period, as the teams were tied up at 2-2.

With a win in their sights, UOIT came out flying to begin the third with their hard work paying off as Carling Jeyes (Little Britain, ON) scored her fourth goal of the season restoring the Ridgebacks one goal lead. At this point of the game, Queen’s picked up the tempo looking for the tying goal. Putting everything they could on net directed at goaltender Carleigh Taggart (Oshawa, ON), the Golden Gaels managed to slip one past the net-minder as Andrea Leblanc scored with eight minutes left on the clock. With the game knotted up, both teams played mistake free hockey down the stretch as they finished regulation time playing to a 3-3 tie.

Both teams skated hard for the entire five minute overtime period, but were still unable to register another goal as the teams went home with one point apiece. Queen’s had a power play during overtime, but Taggart shut the door making four stops in the final frame.

Despite 19 minor penalties called in the game, none of the six goals were scored on the power play. UOIT was 0-for-9 while Queen’s was 0-for-10 with the man advantage. The Golden Gaels out shot the Ridgebacks 37-23 in the game.

The Ridgebacks will now host a pair of teams from the Kitchener-Waterloo region next weekend as they face the top-ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday night (7:30 pm) and the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday afternoon (1:30 pm). All home games are played at the Campus Ice Centre.
