Oshawa (OUA) – UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey player Chrissy Tereshyn, was recognized yesterday at the OUA's Fifth Annual Women of Influence Luncheon at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. For the last five years, the OUA recognizes the top female scholar-athletes from across the province who have excelled in their chosen sports and fields of study. At this year’s event, Canadian Golfer Lorie Kane was the keynote speaker.
This year was the first year an UOIT Athlete had been recognized at the event. Chrissy has proven in the past and especially over the last two years attending UOIT that she is a young woman who demonstrates tremendous leadership ability on and off the ice. She came to UOIT as an honours student and took on an immediate leadership role with the development of the women’s varsity hockey program. She brings a wealth of experience to the team as she joined the Ridgebacks after playing nine seasons with the Durham-West Lightning of the OWHA, highlighted when she scored the game winning goal at the Ontario Provincial Championships.
Ridgebacks head coach Gary Pitcher acknowledged her leadership ability as she was named an assistant captain prior to the team’s inaugural season. While playing a major role on the hockey team, Chrissy has also made her studies a priority as she has maintained a 3.7 GPA in a very challenging program. She has also received a number of academic awards from the University
All of the honoured athletes and guests were treated by a keynote speech from LPGA golfer Lorie Kane. The Canadian golf legend discussed the path she took to accomplish her goals in life as well as her experience playing professional golf. She also talked about how she learned from her mentors, helping her overcome obstacles that may have got in her way.
”I was very impressed with the Women of Influence Luncheon. The OUA did a first class job in putting on this event for the 19 young women who were recognized,” commented UOIT Athletic Coordinator Scott Barker. “The Keynote speaker Lorie Kane did an outstanding job addressing the 800 plus guests at the luncheon talking about her story of road she took to success as a golf professional.“
Chrissy will be in action with her UOIT Ridgeback teammates on Saturday, January 25 vs. Laurier (7:30 pm) and Sunday, January 26 vs. Waterloo (1:30 pm). Both games will be taking place at the Campus Ice Centre.
