Waterloo Tops Ridgebacks 4-1 at the Campus Ice Centre

Melissa Findlay

Oshawa (OUA) – The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team let an excellent opportunity pass them by as the Waterloo Warriors skated to a 4-1 victory at the Campus Ice Centre on Sunday afternoon.

Entering the game after an impressive performance against the No. 3 nationally ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday night, the Ridgebacks looked to be in good form to capture their second win of the year against the Warriors, the same team in which they defeated back in November for their only win of the year.

After
Waterloo shocked the hometown team as they broke open the scoring with a pair goals midway through the first period, UOIT head coach Gary Pitcher settled his team down, trying to regroup the team and get them back on track.

The team responded at the
6:58 mark of the second period as right winger Melissa Findlay (Oshawa, ON) netted her fourth goal of the season, cutting the Waterloo lead to 2-1. Megan Friel (Pickering, ON) and Sarah Carter (Newtonville, ON) picked up assists on the play. Findlay has stood out in the last couple of weeks for UOIT, scoring two goals in the Ridgebacks last three games, as well as registering points in three of the last four games.

At the 14:28 minute mark of the second period, the Warriors regained their two goal lead as freshman Mandy Harrop notched her fourth goal of the year, beating UOIT starting goaltender Carleigh Taggart (Oshawa, ON) for the third time of the game.

With UOIT pressing hard in the third period trying to get back into the game,
Waterloo’s Kelly Maclean scored her team’s fourth goal at the 8:38 minute mark, securing the win for the Warriors.

The Ridgebacks are now 1-19-2-2 on the season with three games remaining in the regular season.
Waterloo jumps to 7-13-3-0 and are five points out of a playoff position in the OUA women’s hockey standings.

UOIT’s next home action will be on
Saturday, February 9, 2008 against the Brock Badgers at 1:30 pm. The game will mark the final home game for the Ridgebacks during their inaugural OUA season. Prior to their final home game, UOIT will travel to Toronto for a game against the Varsity Blues on Sunday, February 3, 2008.
