UOIT Welcomes Ian Young to the Men’s Hockey Coaching Staff
Oshawa, ON – The UOIT Ridgeback men’s hockey team is pleased to announce the addition of Ian Young to their coaching staff as the goaltending coach.
Young played goal for the Oshawa Generals from 1963-1967 and tended the net for the University of Waterloo Warriors in 1971. His performance with the Generals earned him a 1st team all-star nomination from 1965-1967; he was also named to the MasterCard all-time Oshawa General all-star team and was named a 2nd team all-star (behind Bernie Parent) for the Hockey News 50th Anniversary OHL All-Star Edition. While at the University of Waterloo Young was named a first team all-star.
From 1983-1996 Ian was the goaltending coach for the Oshawa Generals. During his tenure he coached future NHL’ers Jeff Hackett, Peter Sidorkiewicz, Kirk McLean, Fred Braithwaite and Mike Fountain. In addition, he served as goaltender consultant to the Toronto Maple Leafs, the New York Islanders and the Vancouver Canucks from 1993-1995.
“I am thrilled to add Ian to the coaching staff. When I first took the job at UOIT as the head coach of the men’s hockey team, he was the first guy that came to mind for the goaltending situation. He is one of the premiere guys in the province if not the country” stated head coach Marlin Muylaert.
Young has also authored four goaltending books: Behind the Mask, Beyond the Mask, Lords of the Rink, and Behind the Mask –A Comprehensive Overview.
