RIDGEBACKS MEN'S HOCKEY UPENDED 7-2 BY WESTERN ON THE ROAD! UOIT CONTINUES TO WORK HARD IN THEIR INAUGURAL SEASON OF OUA HOCKEY!

London (OUA) - The UOIT Ridgebacks inaugural season continued in London tonight where the hometown University of Western Ontario Mustangs defeated the Ridgebacks 7-2. The first ever season for Ontario's newest University in the OUA has been a tough one in the W-L record column however, the expansion team with a roster of 100% freshman up and down have competed hard and have served notice that they will soon be a hockey program to be reckoned with in the next year or two as they build and grow.

"We are extremely proud of our Ridgebacks hockey programs, our coaches and our student-athletes and how far we have come in just a short period of time as Ontario's newest OUA member, stated Ken Babcock UOIT Athletic Director.
"We have been a tough opponent this season in just our very first year and I am proud of how we work so hard on the ice everyday at practice and at games competing and representing UOIT so well! The hard work will pay off as we develop and grow our hockey programs"

Tonigt saw the Mustangs score first early however UOIT's Nathan Spaling tied the score at the 7:45 mark of the first period, assisted by Derrick Bagshaw and Brent Varty. The teams battled hard in the first 20 minutes and went into the intermission tied at one (1-1). Nathan is the brother of Nick Spaling of the OHL's Kitchener Rangers who currently sits in the top 10 in OHL Socring this season.

The second period then did not go UOIT's way as Western scored four goals in a seven minute time span to go up 5-1 and take control of the game. menahile Ridgebacks Shane Nolan (who scored UOIT's first ever goal to open the
season) scored his 5th of the year to round out the Ridgebacks scoring.

Western would add 2 more in the 3rd period to make the final 7-2 in front of their home crowd. With the win the Mustangs move to 10-2-0-2 22 points and first place in the OUA Far West Division. While the Ridgebacks drop to
1-7-1-1 4 points and 4th place in the OUA Mid West Division.

Head Coach Marlin Muylaert and the Ridgebacks will regroup and take on the University of Waterloo Warriors in Waterloo tonight at 7:30pm before returning to host Laurier this Saturday night 7:30pm at the Campus Ice Centre.
