Oshawa (OUA) - Head Coach Marlin Muylaert and the UOIT Ridgebacks won a spcetacular game tonight at the Campus Ice Centre coming from behind in the final minute to force overtime and eventually win the game over the 6th ranked team in Canada - University of Western Ontario Mustangs 3-2 in a shoot out.
The Mustangs, Ontario's #1 ranked team and CIS #6 ranked team battled hard with the expansion UOIT Ridgebacks during the opening period with the teams taking a 0-0 deadlock into the dressing room for the first intermission.
Solid goaltending by Matt Mateja and tight checking were the success story for UOIT in the opening period.
The second period did not get off to a great start as the Mustangs netted two gaols within the first 2:48. Marcus Smith opened the scoring with his 3rd of the season while Kyle Lamb socred his 5th to put UWO up 2-0.
meanwhile the Ridge backs never gave up and worked hard shutting down the Mustangs the rest of the second period. Mustangs goalie Keyvan Hunt also played well to this point.
The third period saw UOIT attempt consistant pressure offensively but were truned away by Hunt and the Mustangs on several good chances. Then Coach Muylaert's move to pull Mateja in favour of an extra attacker paid off big time. The Ridgebacks with their net empty put pressure on Western before Derrick Bagshaw (2006-07 OHL Scholastic player of the year) walked out front from the side of the net and wired a wrist shot home with 57 seconds to draw
UOIT within one. His 4th of the year. Now 2-1 Western. With the goalie
still pulled and the Ridgebacks fans loud, Captain Richard Power scored a huge goal that brought the hosue down with just 32 seconds left to tie the game at 2-2.
Overtime was exciting but decided nothing in the 5 minutes of play. Of not the Ridgebacks pplayed most of it shorthanded due to a 4 minute TJ Legge high sticking penalty and then 2 men short for the final 2 minutes. The home side sensing a chance at victory killed off most of the two penalties before an illegal substitution call against the Ridgebacks was made by the referee with 1.9 seconds remaining in OT after it was discovered that UOIT had too many men on the ice inadvertantly. The call resulting in a penalty shot saw Western with a chance to win it with 1.9 seconds left in OT. Matt Mateja slammed the door shut and the game went to a shoot out. Twelve shooters later and big goal in the shootout by Jordan Freeland to tie it up on the final 3rd round shots, then the Ridgebacks behind Jason Fransky scored in the 6th round to clinch a huge win for UOIT against Ontario's #1 ranked team.
