RIDGEBACKS WOMEN'S HOCKEY FALL JUST SHORT

Oshawa - In the second game of the weekend doubleheader action at the Campus Ice Centre, the UOIT Ridgebacks women's hockey program played host to the visiting Windsor Lancers for the second time in two weeks. This time around, the ladies were hoping for different results.

The Ridgebacks came out with fire on their skates and revenge on their minds after losing the night before to the Western Mustangs (London). The Ridgebacks showed the fierce side of their game, taking it straight to the Lancers goal in the first half of the period. This gameplan paid off with five minutes left on the clock, as the Ridgebacks drew first blood with a tap in from Jennifer Campitelli (Scarborough) with the assist coming from Rikki Palmateer (Cobourg) and Morgan Mitchell (Peterborough).

The Ridgebacks came out in the second with a one-goal lead and a solid offensive drive that showed promise. The Ridgebacks defense and goaltender Melissa Scott (Oshawa) were also not taking any hostages at the other end of the ice. The Lancers came close after they charged a shorthanded Ridgebacks goal area, when Melissa Scott lost her stick, but the Ridgebacks held off a barrage of shots to keep the lead. This lead did not last much longer however, as the Lancers Ashley Kirby tied the game with 6:10 left in the period.

Building on the momentum from the end of the second period, Windsor came out hard in the third period and pulled ahead by one at the 3:34 mark. The Lancers then added to this tally when the Ridgebacks failed to clear the puck out of their zone. This goal just about knocked the air out of the Ridgebacks lungs but the women kept pressing in front of their home crowd, which led to a goal by Chrissy Tereshyn (Scarborough) and even louder roars from the home crowd. The pace and intensity of the game went up a notch in the dieing moments as the Ridgebacks went in hunt of the equalizer. Unfortunately, with the extra attacker on the ice the ladies were unable to paw their way back into the game.

Outshot 41-31, Melissa Scott had a solid day in goal as she grabbed 38 saves to keep the Ridgebacks in the game.
