RIDGEBACKS WOMEN'S HOCKEY NET THREE OVER THE WEEKEN

Oshawa – Some unlucky bounces over the last couple of weeks and the UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team were still searching for their elusive first win of the season at the Dog Pound against the strong contingent from York University (Toronto) on the evening of October 27.

The Ridgebacks came out of the gates flying in the first period, applying pressure on the Lions. This offensive surge created scoring chances one after another but the women could not beat the Lions goalkeeper, Megan Slumskie. Despite out shooting York 11-10, the Lions were able to tally the only goal of the period on the power play when goaltender Carleigh Taggart (Oshawa) mishandled a shot from the point and the puck trickled under her catching glove and between her pads.

UOIT opened the second period down 1-0, were able to muster eleven more shots in the period but things didn’t get any brighter, as the Lions were able to score twice before the period was eight minutes old. Before the period was out, the hard work and determination of the Ridgebacks’ fore-check paid off as Sarah Carter (Newtonville) was able to pick up a lose puck in front of the opposing net and put the ladies within two heading into the third period.

The Ridgebacks opened the third period showing a lot of heart as they fought off the constant attack of the Lions. Two straight UOIT penalties lead to a fourth York goal, but the ladies would not go down without a fight as they were able to put two pucks past Slumskie in a span of less than two minutes including a power-play and shorthanded marker that trimmed the lead to one. Despite out shooting the Lions 41-32, that’s as close as the ladies would get as the Lions countered with two more goals including an empty netter. York goaltender Megan Slumskie finished with 38 saves, while Carleigh Taggart had 26 in the losing effort.

Emily Milito scored the game winning goal and assisted on three others, helping the University of Toronto Varsity Blues defeat UOIT 7-0 on Sunday afternoon in the teams' first meeting of this season.

The Ridgebacks came out of the gate with a little more jump than the night before, having a number of scoring opportunities in the first twenty minutes. After a penalty filled first period where both teams were sent off the ice four times apiece for minor penalties, the home team found themselves down by a goal as Toronto capitalized on a 4-on-3 power play opportunity. Emily Milito scored her first goal of the season, putting home a rebound in the corner of the net.

Toronto came out of the locker rooms flying as Janine Davies scored on a wrist shot down the left wing, 53 seconds into the second period. Toronto continued their offensive fury scoring a total of four goals in the period and peppering UOIT goaltender Melissa Scott (Oshawa) with 21 shots in the period.

Milito was the leading scorer for the Varsity Blues scoring the game winning goal and adding three assists. Forwards Annie Del Guidice and Janine Davies both had three point games for the Varsity Blues. Toronto goaltender Stephanie Lockert made 25 saves for the Blues first shutout of the season. The clean sheet also marks the first time in UOIT history that the Ridgebacks did not find the back of the net.

Toronto improves to 5-1-0-1 while the Ridgebacks dropped to 0-8-0-1 with a four game road trip on the horizon. UOIT will head to southwest Ontario next weekend, taking on the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, November 3rd at 2:00 pm followed with a match against the defending OUA champion Laurier Golden Hawks in Kitchener on Sunday, November 4th at 7:30 pm.
