RIDGEBACKS WOMEN'S HOCKEY UNLUCKY AT INVITATIONAL
St. Catherines - In new uniforms and a new season ahead of the Ridgebacks, the ladies traveled to Brock University (St. Catherines) this past weekend to take part in the Brock Badger Invitational.
September 21 vs. Guelph Gryphons
The ladies came out of the gate flying with adrenaline pumping , with both teams battling back and fourth for the first thirteen minutes of the game, exchanging chances until Guelph opened the scoring with five minutes to go in the first period on a shot off a rebound in front of starting UOIT goaltender, Melissa Scott (Oshawa). Guelph would go up 2-0 before the period was over. However, th e first period of the season for the ladies was exciting as they created several scoring chances including centre Chrissy Tereshyn (Scarborough) and Dryden native, Anhika Bruestch , who had an excellent debut in a Ridgeback uniform.
Within the first minute of the second period Megan Friel (Pickering) took the puck with momentum and split the Guelph defense only to be hooked on the play in front of the net, which drew a penalty. Seconds later, Carling Jeyes (Little Britain) scored her fourth of the season. The Ridgebacks got into some penalty trouble late in the second but were able to hold off the Gryphon attack and j ust before the buzzer went off to end the period, Melissa Scott made a game saving save, as she went post to post and made a highlight real glove save to keep the score within reach.
UOIT were able to take this momentum into the third period and scored on a slapshot from the point by veteran defenseman Jackie McArthur (Oshawa). In the end, the Gryphons were able to hold off the Ridgebacks third period push with the final score ending 3-2.

September 22 vs. Brock Badgers
The Ridgebacks came out in the first period with some great forechecking and applied pressure to the Badgers, as the ladies controlled the play in the opening ten minutes of the game. The Badgers were able to score two quick goals in the last minute of the first period.
With Brock taking a penalty to end the first period, the ladies were able to use the intermission to plan for the powerplay and came out and executed the powerplay to perfection as Carling Jeyes scored her second of the tournament. The remainder of the second period was controlled by Brock as UOIT found themselves in penalty trouble, with the Badgers taking a 3-1 lead on a powerplay marker to end the second period.
The coaching staff challenged the players in the second intermission to control the third period and create the chances to tie the game, and at the fifteen minute mark Chrissy Tereshyn scored on a scrum in front of the net. For the second straight game, UOIT pushed their opponents right to the edge creating chances and forcing the opposition to play great defence in order to hold on for the win.
