Hats go off to Derrick Bagshaw – UOIT falls just short of a comeback win

Men’s Hockey: Guelph defeated UOIT 5-4 (OT)

Oshawa, Ont. –
Derrick Bagshaw (Oshawa, Ont.) scored the UOIT Ridgebacks first ever hat trick on Friday night including a game tying goal with one minute remaining in the game, but the Ridgebacks would fall short of the win as they lost in overtime by a final score of 5-4 to the University of Guelph Gryphons.

For UOIT, the team picked up a point for the overtime loss, extending the team’s record breaking point streak to five games. Guelph on the other hand moved one step closer to clinching an OUA playoff berth as they sit in sixth place of the Western Conference, waiting to see if the seventh place Windsor Lancers can catch them for the final post season position with two games this weekend.

Bagshaw had a fantastic game for UOIT picking up three goals on the night, another first in team history. With the Ridgebacks down 4-2 in the third period, Bagshaw scored his second of the night as Shane Nolan (Enfield, NS) and TJ Legge (Chapleau, Ont.) picked up assists to move Ridgebacks within a goal.

With time running out and less than a minute left on the clock, Bagshaw managed to score to tie up the game, picking up the hat trick and lifting the crowd off their feet.

In overtime, midnight struck on the Ridgebacks comeback as Guelph’s Alex Magera scored his second goal of the game giving Guelph the 5-4 overtime win.

Jeff Dawson (Bracebridge, Ont.) had a solid game in net for UOIT making 35 stops in the losing effort. UOIT would go 0-for-1 on the power play while Guelph was 1-for-3.

It was a big night for the fans as the second annual Durham Dodge Chrysler Jeep Bursary Contest took place during the first and second intermissions, where one lucky student walked away with $1,000!

The Ridgebacks will play their final regular season game on Saturday night as they travel to St. Catharines to take on the Brock Badgers. Game time is at 7:30 p.m.
