UOIT and Windsor need a shootout to break a scoreless draw

Women’s Hockey: Windsor defeated UOIT 1-0 (SO)

Windsor, Ont. – The goalies stole the show in Sunday’s women’s hockey regular season finale between the UOIT Ridgebacks and University of Windsor Lancers as the two teams would end up in a shootout after going scoreless for three periods an overtime. In the shootout, it took the tenth shooter to finally break the ice as Windsor’s Laurel Ansell scored to give the Lancers the 1-0 victory.

UOIT freshman goaltender Emma Thompson (Hastings, Ont.) was phenomenal in net making all 40 stops in the game, picking up her second shutout of her career to send the game into a shootout. Thompson has been the goalie in both of UOIT’s shutouts, with the first one coming on January 10 in a 3-0 win over Queen’s University.

On the other end of the ice, Windsor’s Jamie Tessier stopped all 20 Ridgebacks shots for her fifth shutout of the year.

Both teams failed to qualify for the OUA postseason as the Ridgebacks finished the year with a 3-23-1 record while Windsor would end up 12-13-2.

Second year centre Rikki Palmateer (Cobourg, Ont.) led the team in scoring for the second consecutive year as she registered 15 points on the year. Palmateer now has 29 points in two seasons with the Ridgebacks. Vanessa Johnstone (Niagara Falls, Ont.) led all freshmen in scoring with 13 points this season.

As the season went on, Thompson took control of the starting goalie position with her fine play as she in net for all of UOIT’s points this season while recording .909 save percentage.

Ken Babcock, University of Ontario Institute of Technology Athletic Director, will meet with representatives from the media, fans of the Ridgebacks, and UOIT faculty/staff  to announce important news relative to the development of the women’s hockey program. This media conference will be held on Monday, February 23, 2009 at the Campus Ice Centre at 4 p.m.
