Marlin Muylaert picks up 200th CIS win – Ridgebacks win in a shootout!
Men’s Hockey: UOIT defeated Brock 3-2 (SO)
Oshawa, Ont. – Mike Noyes (Lucan, Ont.) tallied the game-winning goal for the UOIT men’s hockey team in a shootout as the Ridgebacks came up with a 3-2 win over Brock University Friday night. For Ridgebacks head coach Marlin Muylaert, it was a very special night as it marked his 200th overall win coaching in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS).
Muylaert began his CIS career with the University of Guelph where he coached from 1988-1999, accumulating an overall record of 188-114-20. In two seasons with UOIT, the Port Perry native has coached the Ridgebacks to twelve wins, bringing his career total to the milestone mark. Muylaert is now eighth on the charts for most wins by an active CIS coach.
In Friday night’s contest, the Ridgebacks came flying out of the gate in front of the large crowd at the Campus Ice Centre. The Ridgebacks would outshoot the Badgers 12-5, but were unable to find the back of the net as the teams would head into the locker room scoreless after one period.
Before fans could get back in their seats following intermission, UOIT captain Derrick Bagshaw (Oshawa, Ont.) was able to beat Brock goaltender Tommy Lee just 12 seconds into the second period to open up scoring in the game.
Just two minutes later, Tony Rizzi (Kingston, Ont.) put the Ridgebacks ahead 2-0 on a goal assisted by Kyle Wetering (Pickering, Ont.) and Noyes. Rizzi has scored 23 points this season, ranking him in the top 10 of OUA freshmen scoring while Noyes has 21 points on the year, ranking him second in OUA defensive scoring.
Heading into the third period, the Ridgebacks led with a dominating 22-11 shot advantage and a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard. But, at 3:50 into the third period, Brock managed to net their first goal of the game as Nathan Hooper scored his ninth goal of the year. Brock then tied the game at the 7:50 minute mark as Chris McLean put one past UOIT goalkeeper Jeff Dawson (Bracebridge, Ont.).
UOIT had plenty of chances to regain the lead in the third period and overtime with 13 shots on net, including a Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) attempt that hit the post, but the teams remained tied sending the game into a shootout.
With the Ridgebacks down 1-0 in the shootout, Bagshaw needed to score to keep his team alive. The captain was clutch as he roofed the puck past the Brock netminder to keep the Ridgebacks alive. After Brock missed on their next attempt, it was the freshmen defensemen Noyes who scored to send the hometown crowd into a frenzy with the Ridgebacks picking up the 3-2 victory.
Dawson stood strong for UOIT in net as he made 3 of 4 stops in the shootout. He also made 16 stops in the game for his third win of the year.
The win marked the Ridgebacks first win over Brock University as they were previously 0-4-0 against the Badgers including a 7-0 loss earlier this season. The Ridgebacks have now picked up points in three consecutive games, another first for program.
Tonight, the team was also a winner off the ice as they raised money for the Humane Society of Durham. The UOIT Ridgebacks would like to thank everyone for their generous support throughout the night for such a great cause.
UOIT will now face first place York University on Saturday afternoon in North York. The Ridgebacks regular season home finale will be on Friday, February 13 against the University of Guelph Gryphons. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Campus Ice Centre. It will also mark the second annual Durham Dodge Chrysler Jeep $1,000 giveaway.
