UOIT cannot pull off the upset in Montreal
Men’s Hockey: McGill defeated UOIT 4-1
Montreal, PQ – The UOIT Ridgebacks will come home from their Eastern road swing with nothing to show as they were upended by the McGill University Redmen Saturday night by a final score of 4-1.
In what was a very entertaining affair, a total of 21 penalties were handed out resulting in a lot of open ice and a number of scoring opportunities.
McGill netted a goal in the first period and two more in the second to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the game. Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) would score his ninth goal of the year on the power play to cut the Redmen lead to 3-1 late in the third, but McGill would end up adding one more insurance marker to close out the game. Derrick Bagshaw (Oshawa, Ont.) and Nathan Spaling (Drayton, Ont.) would pick up assists on the play. Vatri and Bagshaw are currently on a three game point streaks to open up 2009.
UOIT had plenty of opportunities to get back into the contest but the team could not find the back of the net as they hit a number of posts and McGill goalie Danny Mireault made a number of key saves.
Jeff Dawson (Bracebridge, Ont.) made his second appearance in net for UOIT in as many nights and made 39 stops in the losing effort. UOIT went 1-for-10 on the power play while McGill was 2-for-11.
UOIT drops to 3-13-2 on the season while McGill improves to 8-6-2. The Ridgebacks will now head home for back-to-back games on Friday, January 16 (vs. Ottawa – 7:30 p.m.) and Saturday, January 17 (vs. UQTR – 3:30 p.m.). Saturday is Blue Crew Day at the Campus Ice Centre and all Blue Crew members will receive free admission to the game.
