Ridgebacks pick up first ever shutout

Women’s Hockey: UOIT defeated Queen’s 3-0

Kingston, Ont. – It was a night of “firsts”  for the UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey program on Saturday night as the team picked up a 3-0 victory over the Queen’s University Gaels in Kingston.

UOIT goaltender Emma Thompson (Hastings, Ont.) picked up UOIT’s first shutout in the women’s hockey program’s history turning aside 32 shots. The win also marked UOIT’s first series victory over an OUA opponent as the Ridgebacks won two of three games against the Gaels this season. In the three games, UOIT outscored Queen’s 10-5. The win also marked UOIT’s first road win of the season.

Described by the coaching staff as a total team effort, the Ridgebacks looked very impressive in their first game of 2009. Melissa Bell (Cobourg, Ont.) opened up scoring just four minutes into the game, giving the Ridgebacks the early lead. Early in the second period, it was the UOIT freshmen taking control of the game as Kara Carter (Whitby, Ont.) scored her first OUA career goal, assisted by Emily Bremer (Barrie, Ont.) and Sarah Matthews (Whitby, Ont.). Jackie McArthur (Oshawa, Ont.) added an empty net goal in the third period to seal up the 3-0 win.

This season, Thompson has picked up all three wins for UOIT, while posting a .914 save percentage in 14 games. She has faced 442 shots this year, second most in the OUA.

The Ridgebacks are now 3-14-0 heading into a tough weekend series at home against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues (9-5-0) and Laurier Golden Hawks (16-0-0). Saturday night’s game against U of T (7:30 p.m.) will be Oshawa Lady Generals night at the Campus Ice Centre.
