Top ranked teams headed to Oshawa – Four Games in Three Days
Oshawa, Ont. – After joining OUA hockey last season, Oshawa hockey fans knew that they would see some of the top University talent coming through the Campus Ice Centre. Little did they know that it would be on the same weekend.
As the men’s and women’s hockey programs look forward to four games in three days over the weekend, three CIS nationally ranked opponents are visiting the Dog Pound.
The UOIT men’s team will open up action on Friday night as they take on the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees at 7:30 p.m. Ottawa is the only non-ranked opponent but is a strong opponent as they have a 8-6-4 record and are currently riding a four game winning streak. This will mark Ottawa’s first visit to the Campus Ice Centre. The rink will be buzzing as the night will also mark the first annual Faculty of Health Science night with plenty of prizes to be given away.
Up next for the Ridgebacks men’s hockey team will be the CIS second ranked Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR) Patriotes. UQTR, who is the top ranked team in the OUA has been dominant this season with a 16-1-1 record and are on a 14 game point streak. The Patriotes lineup features the league’s top two goal scorers as Jonathan Boutin (17 goals) and Alexandre Demers (14 points) have frustrated opposing goalies all season long.
Coming off the program’s first shutout on Saturday (3-0 over Queen’s), the UOIT women’s hockey team will look to make it back-to-back wins as they face the eighth ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues. U of T is 10-5-1 this season. Saturday night will be Oshawa Lady Generals night at the Dog Pound. Fans wearing Blue Crew T-Shirts will also receive free admission to both of Saturday’s games. Blue Crew T-Shirts are always available for purchase before every home game for only $10 and Blue Crew members receive free food prior to every home game.
It will not get any easier for UOIT the next night as they take on the third ranked Laurier Golden Hawks. Laurier is perfect on the year with a 17-0-0 record while outscoring their opponents 72-15. The program has been the class of the OUA having won five straight OUA titles.
Although the mountain may look steep heading into the weekend games, the Ridgebacks are looking forward to the challenge of competing with the top teams in the country.
