Oshawa, Ont. – Six UOIT rowers recently took part in a weightlifting competition held on VirtualMeet.net. The competition takes place through video submission where judges rank the lift first as a pass or fail and then record how much weight was actually lifted. The results are adjusted by weight and age to allow everyone to compete together. Ingrid Piat (Oshawa, Ont.), Lenora Makin (Lanark, Ont.), Taylan Brown (Newtonville, Ont.), Neysa Laszkiewicz (Oshawa, Ont.), Lisa Harrington (Whitby, Ont.) and Charles Elliott (Bowmanville, Ont.) were this year’s participants.
The purpose of the virtual power lifting meet is to continue competition in the offseason and to push the athletes in a new and fun way. The power lifting challenge consists of the bench press, dead lift as well as squats. VirtualMeet.net aims to create a global arena where people united by the love of iron can lift together and learn from each other for friendship, fun and personal records in an atmosphere of mutual respect and good sportsmanship.
The UOIT rowers showed to have great technique and awareness as they came out of the meet with a 97% passing percentage on their lifts, compared to just a 56.8% site average of all participants.
The most notable Ridgeback was Piat who placed first overall at the meet with a total score of 367.557 which put her in class four. Makin also finished in class four but was first in the squat category with a score of 123.9712. Elliott also had a good showing representing the UOIT Men’s team with a class four finish
The Ridgebacks will continue to push themselves this offseason in preparation of next year’s rowing season.
