Ridgebacks round up the Gee Gees on Faculty of Health Science Night
Men’s Hockey: UOIT defeated Ottawa 4-2
Oshawa, Ont. – It was a big night for the UOIT men’s hockey team on Friday as the Ridgebacks defeated the University of Ottawa Gee Gees 4-2 at the Campus Ice Centre. The Dog Pound was buzzing all night as the Faculty of Health Science was in attendance showing their support for the blue and white.
With the win, the Ridgebacks are now 2-0-0 at home in 2009 heading into their match-up against the nationally second ranked UQTR Patriotes (17-1-1) on Saturday afternoon (3:30 p.m. start). At the Campus Ice Centre this season, UOIT has played very well, compiling a 4-4-1 record.
Jeff Dawson (Bracebridge, Ont.) made a terrific home debut in between the pipes for UOIT as he stopped 36 of 38 shots to pick up his first win of the season. Ottawa had plenty of scoring chances on the night with eleven power play opportunities, but Dawson and the UOIT defensive unit stood strong holding the Gee Gees to just two goals.
Brent Varty (Oshawa, Ont.) scored the Ridgebacks first two goals of the game, both of which were on the power play with Dustin Turner (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) picking up two assists. Mike Noyes (Lucan, Ont.) would score the team’s third power play marker midway through the second period giving UOIT a 3-0 lead. Derrick Bagshaw (Oshawa, Ont.) would pick up an assist on the goal, extending his point scoring streak to four games.
Ottawa would strike back with a pair of goals putting the game within reach at 3-2, but Tony Rizzi (Kingston, Ont.) would add an insurance marker at the 5:47 minute mark of the third period to give UOIT a 4-2 lead and eventually the victory.
Rizzi and Noyes each picked up two points on the night, as they now have 19 and 18 points respectively on the year. Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) leads the team in points with 20 this season.
UOIT improves to 4-13-2 while Ottawa falls to 8-7-4. The Ridgebacks will host UQTR on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. for Blue Crew Day at the Campus Ice Centre. All Blue Crew members will receive free admission to the game.
