UOIT shutout against the top ranked Laurier Golden Hawks

Women’s Hockey: Laurier defeated UOIT 4-0

Oshawa, Ont. – The UOIT women’s hockey team hosted the number three CIS ranked Laurier Golden Hawks Sunday night at the Campus Ice Centre, but came out on the wrong side of a 4-0 decision.

The first period play was controlled by Laurier as they out shot the Ridgebacks 19-2, but Carleigh Taggart (Bowmanville, Ont.) made a number of key saves to keep the Ridgebacks close. The Golden Hawks would eventually score the games first goal at the 14:11 minute mark as Heather Fortuna netted her team leading eleventh goal of the year giving Laurier a 1-0 lead after one period.

UOIT improved as the game went on as they were able to apply some offensive pressure with 18 shots on net over the next two periods, but the Golden Hawks would be the only team to find the back of the net as they notched three more goals in the second period to win by a final score of 4-0.

Taggart looked impressive throughout the night making 39 stops for the Ridgebacks. Her counterpart Cindy Eadie made 20 stops for the shutout. In two appearances this year, Eadie has not allowed a single goal on 39 shots faced.

With their tenth shutout of the season, Laurier improves to 19-0-0 on the year while outscoring their opponents 78-16. UOIT drops to 3-16-0 this season.

UOIT will now hit the road for back-to-back games against the University of Guelph Gryphons next weekend. The Ridgebacks next home action is on Friday, January 30 against the York University Lions. Puck drop at the Campus Ice Centre is 7:30 p.m.
