Guelph hands UOIT a 5-1 loss – Rematch tomorrow night

Men’s Hockey: Guelph defeated UOIT 5-1

Guelph, Ont. – The UOIT men’s hockey team had trouble scoring against the University of Guelph on Thursday night as they were defeated 5-1. Despite the loss, the team will not have to wait for long to meet up with the Gryphons for a rematch as they hit the ice tomorrow night at the Campus Ice Centre in the second game of a home and home series.

UOIT came out flying in the first period with 15 shots on net but were held off the scoresheet. Despite holding Guelph to just seven shots, UOIT fell behind in the game 2-0 after one as the Gryphons capitalized with two goals over a four minute stretch.

The second period mirrored the first as UOIT once again had a number of scoring opportunities with 13 shots on net, but it was Guelph lighting the lamp with three goals in the frame, giving them a comfortable 5-0 lead. The Ridgebacks would score a goal late in the third period to break the shutout, but it was too little-too late as Guelph skated to the 5-1 victory.

Jeff Dawson (Bracebridge, Ont.), who was making his fifth consecutive start in net since joining the Ridgebacks allowed three goals on eight shots. Matt Mateja came in on relief and stopped 23 of 25 shots he faced.

Newly appointed Captain Derrick Bagshaw (Oshawa, Ont.) was held pointless on the night, snapping his consecutive game scoring streak at five. Shane Nolan (Enfield, N.S.) picked up the Ridgebacks lone goal, his sixth of the season.

With the loss, UOIT falls to 4-15-2 on the year with an 0-9-1 record on the road. The team will look to turn things around at home tomorrow night as they have a rematch against the Gryphons starting at 7:30 p.m.
