UOIT falls to third straight nationally ranked opponent

Women’s Hockey: Guelph defeated UOIT 8-2

Guelph, Ont. – The UOIT women’s hockey team fell 8-2 to the CIS number five ranked University of Guelph Gryphons Saturday afternoon.

For UOIT, it was their third straight game against a nationally ranked opponent as they matched up against the Laurier Golden Hawks (No. 3) and Toronto Varsity Blues (No. 8) last weekend.

Things looked bright for UOIT to open up their game on Saturday aftrnoon, as they capitalized on their opportunities in the first period, scoring two goals on six shots. The Ridgebacks forced Guelph to play catch up in the game as Chrissy Tereshyn (Scarborough, Ont.) and Vanessa Johnstone (Niagara Falls, Ont.) picked up the two early goals for UOIT. As they have all season, the Gryphons managed to find a way to bounce back everytime they fell behind as they leveled the game at 2-2 by the end of the first period.

In the second and third period, Guelph was clearly the better team as they scored three goals in each period, skating away with an 8-2 victory. Jennifer Rivers picked up a hat trick for the Gryphons, while Tamara Bell and Jessica Zerafa scored five and four points respectively. The Gryphons would end up out shooting UOIT in the game 40-19 while going 2-for-3 on the power play. UOIT was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.

On Sunday afternoon, the Ridgebacks will look to bounce back with a better effort as they will take on the Gryphons in a rematch. Puck drop in Guelph will be at 2 p.m.
