Gryphons prove to be the Ridgebacks Achilles Heel

Women’s Hockey: Guelph defeated UOIT 5-0

Guelph, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team dropped their second straight decision to the University of Guelph in as many days as the Gryphons skated to a 5-0 win on Sunday afternoon.

In four meetings between the Guelph/UOIT men’s and women’s hockey programs this week, the Gryphons swept the Ridgebacks in all four games.

After suffering an 8-2 loss on Saturday, the Ridgebacks knew they had to come out with a bang in order to have a chance to defeat the nationally fifth ranked Gryphons. In the first period, the Ridgebacks out-shot and out-chanced Guelph but were unable to light the lamp as the teams went into the first intermission scoreless.

Mirroring the game prior, the Gryphons took over the game in the second and third period as they scored five unanswered goals to win by a final score of 5-0. Jessica Zerafa recorded two goals and an assist, bringing her weekend total against UOIT to seven points. Zerafa is currently sixth in OUA league scoring.

The Ridgebacks could not seem to get into a rhythm on the power play in the game as they went 0-for-7 while Guelph went 2-for-5. Final shots in the game were 34-17 in favour of Guelph.

Guelph goalie Chelsey Roy made 17 stops for her first shutout in her OUA career. For the second place Gryphons, it was their third shutout of the season. Carleigh Taggart (Bowmanville, Ont.) made 29 stops in net for UOIT.

Up next, UOIT (3-18-0) will look to put an end to their four game slide as they take on York University (12-10-0) at home on Friday, January 30 at 7:30 p.m. The Lions enter the game on a five game winning streak and could move into the national rankings this week.
