Offensive outburst at the Dog Pound - New Ridgebacks Records!
Men’s Hockey: UOIT defeated Ryerson 8-7
Oshawa, Ont. – There was plenty of offense between the UOIT Ridgebacks and Ryerson Rams on Wednesday night as the teams combined for 15 goals in OUA men’s hockey action at the Campus Ice Centre. When all was said and done, the Ridgebacks would end up picking up an 8-7 victory over the Rams, earning their fifth conference victory of the season.
The Ridgebacks came out flying as they scored five unanswered goals in the first half of the period, shocking the visiting Rams. Down 5-0 early on, Ryerson would claw back into the game with two goals of their own in less than a minute, but UOIT would strike once again just 31 second later as they would grab a 6-2 lead. It was a wild first period as in a span of 5:13 minutes, the teams had combined for six goals. Later in the period, Ryerson would score their third goal of the game to cut the Ridgebacks lead in half at 6-3.
The teams would trade goals in the second period, with the Ridgebacks holding a 7-4 lead entering the third.
When UOIT opened up scoring at the 8:47 mark of the third period to get an 8-4 lead, it looked as if a win was in the bag. Ryerson had different thoughts as they refused to give up, continuing to fight hard down the stretch. The Rams would score three consecutive goals to get within a one, but time would eventually run out as UOIT would hang on to pick up the thrilling 8-7 victory.
Tonight’s eight goal performance set a new team record for UOIT for most goals in a game, as the previous record was seven set on November 1, 2007 in an 8-7 loss to York. The six goals scored in the first period also set a new team record for most goals in a period, besting their previous record of four which was down twice earlier this season. Fifteen goals scored between the teams is also a new OUA season high for most goals in a game.
Individually, Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) set a new team record for most points in a game with four (two goals and two assists) on the night. Nathan Spaling (Drayton, Ont.) also had a great night as he registered three points including a goal and two assists.
Other Ridgebacks to have multi-point games included T.J. Legge (Chapleau, Ont.), Ryan Spencer (Woodville, Ont.) and Derrick Bagshaw (Oshawa, Ont.), all with two points apiece.
Alex Sharpe, Cory Konecny and Kevin Day were the offensive threats for Ryerson combining for eleven points on the night.
Jeremy Whelan (Pickering, Ont.) of the Ridgebacks would score the eventual game winner at the 8:47 mark of the third period.
With the win, UOIT jumps to 5-16-2 on the year while improving their home record to 5-6-1. Ryerson drops to 4-18-0 on the year and are currently on a seven game losing streak.
The Ridgebacks will back at it on Thursday night as they travel to North York to take on the University of York Lions at 7 p.m. Fans can catch UOIT at home on Friday, February 6 against Brock University for Humane Society of Durham Night. For event details, please visit www.uoitridgebacks.com.
