Ridgebacks ring in the new year with a win

Men’s Hockey: UOIT defeated Carleton 3-2

Oshawa, Ont. –
The UOIT Ridgebacks opened up 2009 on a winning note as they defeated Carleton University 3-2 at the Campus Ice Centre on Saturday night.

With the win, the Ridgebacks are now 2-0 all-time against Carleton, with both teams entering OUA men’s hockey in the 2007-08 season.

UOIT looked flat out of the gate, as Carleton scored on the power play just 2:54 minutes into the game. The Ravens would continue to apply offensive pressure, but starting goalie Matt Mateja (Mississauga, Ont.) made 14 stops to keep the Ridgebacks within a single goal after one period.

Early in the second frame, Carleton would add to their lead as they scored just three minutes into the period to give them a 2-0 lead.

That is when UOIT head coach Marlin Muylaert would turn to his top line to get the blue and white back into the game, and they did not disappoint. Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.), Derrick Bagshaw (Oshawa, Ont.) and Dustin Turner (Charlottetown, PEI) scored three goals in the final four minutes of the period, to put the Ridgebacks ahead 3-2. All three line mates scored a goal in the offensive explosion to close out the period, including a highlight reel pass from Vatri to Bagshaw on the Ridgebacks second goal.

In the third period, Carleton looked to get the equalizer, but Mateja and the Ridgebacks defence limited the Ravens chances as both teams went scoreless giving UOIT their third conference victory of the year.

Mateja made 40 saves in the win, with the finals shots being 42-40 in favour of Ravens. UOIT was 0-for-4 with the man advantage while Carleton was 1-for-5.

The win was a big confidence boost for UOIT, as the team struggled to find any rhythm at the beginning of the season. The team will now head to Quebec next weekend for a pair of games against Concordia and McGill, and then head home for back-to-back home games against Ottawa (Jan. 16 – 7:30 p.m.) and UQTR (Jan. 17 – 3:30 p.m.).
