Concordia pulls out a comeback win over UOIT

Men’s Hockey: Concordia defeated UOIT 6-3

Montreal, PQ – The UOIT Ridgebacks held a 3-2 lead going into the third period in their game against Concodia University on Friday night but were unable to come out with a win as the Stingers scored four unanswered goals to pick up a 6-3 victory.

With the loss, the Ridgebacks fall to 3-12-2 on the year while Concordia improves to 9-5-2, extending their point streak to five consecutive games. UOIT has struggled on the road this year as they have dropped all nine decisions.

The Ridgebacks got out to a hot start in Friday’s contest as they scored the game’s first two goals and would end up holding a 3-2 lead heading into the third. In the final frame, Concordia got some good bounces as they managed to find the back of the net four times (one empty net goal) to take a 6-3 victory.

UOIT assistant captain Derrick Bagshaw (Oshawa, Ont.) netted two goals on the night, bringing his season total to six on the year. Bagshaw has recorded five points in two games since returning from an injury that put him out for eleven games in 2008. Freshmen Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) and Tony Rizzi (Kingston, Ont.) both picked up two assists, and they lead the team in scoring with 19 and 17 points respectively this season. Mike Noyes (Lucan, Ont.) picked up UOIT’s other goal on the night.

Jeff Dawson (Bracebridge, Ont.) made his debut for the Ridgebacks in between the pipes and made 34 stops in the loss, as UOIT was outshot 40-25. Concordia went 1-for-6 with the man advantage while UOIT went 2-for-5.

The Ridgebacks will close out their Montreal road trip with a match against McGill on Saturday. The team will head home for back-to-back games on Friday, January 16 (vs. Ottawa – 7:30 p.m.) and Saturday, January 17 (vs. UQTR – 3:30 p.m.). Saturday is Blue Crew Day at the Campus Ice Centre and all Blue Crew members will receive free admission to the game.
