Ridgebacks Men’s Hockey Continues to Improve Defense with the Commitment of a New Recruit

Oshawa, ON – University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) men’s hockey head coach Marlin Muylaert is pleased to welcome defenseman Chris Purves to the Ridgebacks team for the 2008-09 season.  

Purves, a native of Scarborough, has spent time in the Ontario Hockey League with the Windsor Spitfires and Barrie Colts. Most recently, Purves was a member of the Newmarket Hurricanes of the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League (OPJHL) who qualified for the Dudley Hewitt Cup Finals. The stay at home defenseman logged four goals and five assists during the regular season and notched the game winning goal in the in the OPJHL All-Star game.
 
What may be most impressive about Purves is his knowledge on the ice and his awareness of defensive responsibility; “Chris has proven throughout his junior career that he is a very capable defensive player who takes care of his end of the ice first,” commented Muylaert of Purves’ strengths. “I believe Chris will really compliment next season’s group of defenders and will help us become a better defensive team.”

Muylaert has revamped and vastly improved the Ridgebacks blueline during the off-season with the addition of Steve Spade (Rochester, NY), Mike Noyes (Lucan, ON) and now Chris Purves. The prospects will be looked upon to provide defensive stability for the sophomore edition of the UOIT Ridgebacks Men’s Hockey team, in order to improve on the team’s successful first year.

Purves is yet another highly regarded prospect who has already committed to the Ridgebacks program for the 2008-09 season. He was impressed with the UOIT hockey programs along with the campus and eagerly awaits his acceptance to the University.
