UOIT Wins Big at the Dog Pound
Women’s Hockey – UOIT defeated Queen’s 6-2
Oshawa, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team came up with their biggest win in school history as they defeated the Queen’s University Gaels by a final score of 6-2 on Saturday night. It was a great game for UOIT as they picked up their second win of the year at the Campus Ice Centre against a tough Queen's (4-3) squad.
After playing end to end hockey for the majority of the opening frame, UOIT went on a scoring spree late in the period as Jessica Cockburn (Markham, Ont.), Rikki Palmateer (Cobourg, Ont.) and Vanessa Johnstone (Niagara Falls, Ont.) all scored within a four minute stretch to give UOIT a 3-0 lead.
Queen’s would score on the power play early in the second period to get within two goals, but UOIT would strike right back as Johnstone netted her second goal of the night, giving UOIT a 4-1 lead and chasing Queen’s starting goalie Melissa John out of the game. The teams would trade goals to close out the second period as UOIT would hold a 5-2 lead heading into the final frame.
Pressing to get back into the game, Queen’s threw everything at the Ridgebacks net but goaltender Emma Thompson (Hastings, Ont.) was up to the test as she stopped all 12 third period shots. Captain Megan Friel (Pickering, Ont.) added a shorthanded empty net goal as the Ridgebacks would skate away with the 6-2 victory.
Palmateer would finish the night with a goal and two assists while Chrissy Tereshyn (Scarborough, Ont.) added two assists. Breanne Hadley (Belleville, Ont.) continued her fine freshman season as she scored her fourth goal of the year to go along with an assist. Palmateer and Hadley have seven and six points respectively on the year.
Queen’s was 2-for-10 on the power play while UOIT was 0-for-3. Queen’s outshot UOIT 38-31 in the game with Thompson making 36 stops to pick up her second win of the year.
UOIT will now head on the road for two games before heading back to the Campus Ice Centre on Friday, November 14 for a game against York University. Puck drop at the Dog Pound is at 7:30 p.m.
