Lancers outlast UOIT in Windsor

Men’s Hockey: Windsor defeated UOIT 5-3

Windsor, Ont. – A UOIT Ridgebacks comeback was cut short in their game against the University of Windsor Friday night as the Lancers picked up a 5-3 victory in OUA men’s hockey action.

Windsor got off to good start as they got first period markers from Brett Oliphant and Mark Thorburn to go up 2-0 in the opening frame. The Lancers would extend their lead in the second period as Shayne Taylor scored his sixth goal of the season and Jonathan Sciacca added his second of the year to put Windsor on top 4-0.

In the third period, the Ridgebacks would battle back as they scored two goals in the first five minutes of the period to cut the Lancer lead to 4-2. Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) got the Ridgebacks on the board with his fourth goal in six games while Tony Rizzi (Kingston, Ont.) scored his second goal of the year. Captain Richard Power (Toronto, Ont.) would pick up assists on both goals.

Windsor would respond from there as defenseman Ryan Crouch scored at the ten minute mark of the final period to extend the lead to 5-2. Nathan Spaling (Drayton, Ont.) would score on the power play late in the game, but the Ridgebacks would fall short losing by a final score of 5-3. For Spaling, it was his fourth point in the Ridgebacks last two games.

Jim Watt had a strong outing in goal for the Lancers as he stopped 33 shots to earn the victory. Matt Mateja (Mississauga, Ont.) allowed three goals on 18 shots while Nick Fontana (Whitby, Ont.) surrendered two goals on 19 shots.

With the loss, the Ridgebacks fall to 2-5-1 in conference play while Windsor improves to 4-5-1. UOIT is winless in their four games and have not won on the road yet this season.

The Ridgebacks will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they play Windsor at 2 p.m.
