Ridgebacks Come Home Empty Despite a Strong Effort

Men’s Hockey: Windsor defeated UOIT 5-4

Windsor, Ont. –
The UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team played two strong games over the weekend in Windsor but will return to Oshawa empty handed as they were swept by the Windsor Lancers in back-to-back games. On Saturday, the Ridgebacks were defeated 5-4 at Windsor Arena.

After one period of play, the Ridgebacks were down by a goal as Windsor took a 2-1 lead in the first frame. Tony Rizzi (Kingston, Ont.) scored the Ridgebacks lone goal on the power play, his third of the year, with assists going to Mike Noyes (Lucan, Ont.) and Richard Power (Toronto, Ont.).

UOIT quickly tied things up as Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) scored just :56 seconds into the second stanza. Vatri’s goal scoring streak has been extended to four games, establishing a new Ridgeback streak. Nathan Spaling (Drayton, Ont.) and Rizzi picked up the assists on the goal.

With the game knotted at 2-2, the Lancers managed to take control of the game as they scored two straight goals to go ahead 4-2. Chris Lowe (Smiths Falls, Ont.) would net his first goal of the year to bring UOIT within a goal heading into the final frame.

In the third, Windsor would once again extend their lead to two goals as Shayne Taylor scored his seventh goal of the year, which forced head coach Marlin Muylaert to pull starting goalie Matt Mateja (Mississauga, Ont.) after allowing five goals. A Nathan Spaling marker at 18:05 of the period would bring the Ridgebacks within a single goal, but time would eventually run out on the comeback as Windsor skated away with the 5-4 win.

The Ridgebacks ran into some bad luck in the game as an apparent goal was called back by the referee, which would have tied things up.

UOIT (2-6-1) will look to rebound next weekend with two home games at the Dog Pound. The Ridgebacks will square off against the Waterloo Warriors on Friday, November 21 and then take on the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, November 22. Laurier is currently ranked sixth in Canada. Both games over the weekend will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Campus Ice Centre.
