Ridgebacks Fall 3-1 to Queen’s University

Women’s Hockey: Queen’s defeated UOIT 3-1

Oshawa, Ont. – For the second straight night, the UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team played competitive game, but could not put together a complete performance as they allowed three second period goals in a 3-1 loss to the Queen’s University Gaels.

After combining for eight goals in their last meeting, the two team’s surprisingly played to a scoreless draw after the first period.
 
In the second frame, the Gaels would come out flying as they scored three goals, led by veteran Kelsey Thomson who netted two of the goals. OUA defenders have been having trouble containing Thomson all year, as the goals were her sixth and seventh of the campaign, leaving her second in the league.

UOIT managed to turn things around in the third and final period as they out shot the Gaels 12-5. Captain Megan Friel (Pickering, Ont.) scored on the power play at the nine minute mark for UOIT, with assists going to Chrissy Tereshyn (Scarborough, Ont.) and Vanessa Johnstone (Niagara Falls, Ont.). Despite their best effort, that was the extent of scoring for UOIT as Queen’s would pick up the two goal victory.

Only giving up two power plays compared two six by Queen’s, the Ridgebacks played a well discipline game. UOIT would go 1-for-6 with the man advantage while Queen’s was 0-for-2.

UOIT will now look ahead to next weekend as they host the Brock Badgers on Saturday, November 22 at 3:30 p.m. Since defeating Brock in their home opener, the Badgers have gone 5-2-1 and sit in fourth place in the standings. UOIT will also take on the University of Guelph on Sunday, November 23 (7:30 p.m.) at the Campus Ice Centre.
