Ridgebacks show a lot of fight against Laurier

Men’s Hockey: Wilfrid Laurier defeated UOIT 6-4

Oshawa, Ont. – Matching up against the seventh ranked team in the nation, the UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team fell a little short of the upset as they were defeated 6-4 against the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks.

Down 6-0 in the final period, Marlin Muylaert’s squad never gave up as they scored the games final four goals down the stretch to cut the Golden Hawks lead to just 6-4, much to the delight of the hometown faithful. Unfortunately, that is how the comeback would end as Laurier skated away with their tenth win of the season.

John Koch-Butterworth (Uxbridge, Ont.) scored two goals in the Ridgebacks third period rally, while teammate Chris Lowe (Smiths Falls, Ont.) added two assists. Paul Pascuzzi (Whitby, Ont.) and Ryan Spencer (Woodville, Ont.) netted their first goals of the year for UOIT while Tommy Tereshyn (Scarborough, Ont.) picked up his first point in a Ridgebacks uniform with an assist.

The game was also not without it’s controversy as it had looked like the Ridgebacks had scored the game’s opening goal early in the second period, but the head referee blew the goal off claiming that it had not gone in the net. Laurier would then storm back to score four goals in the period to establish a healthy lead heading into the final period.

Matt Mateja (Mississauga, Ont.) had a busy night in net making 39 stops in the losing effort. Jeff MacDougald was in goal for Laurier making 29 saves, as he was credited with his tenth win of the year. Laurier was 2-for-7 with the man advantage while UOIT was 1-for-5.

UOIT will head back on the road for three games next weekend, before returning home on Thursday, December 4 for a game against the Western Mustangs at 7:30 p.m.
