Ridgebacks fall to the second place Gryphs
Women’s Hockey: Guelph defeated UOIT 5-1
Oshawa, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team was put to the test on Sunday evening as they faced the second place University of Guelph Gyphons at the Campus Ice Centre. Although UOIT proved that they can skate with the best of the best, the blue and white could not come up with a victory as the Gryphon’s would win by a score of 5-1.
Guelph would get out to a strong start at the evening affair as they scored just 1:36 minutes into the game. After Guelph took a 2-0 lead, UOIT managed to get on the board late in the period as Vanessa Johnstone (Niagara Falls, Ont.) scored her third goal of the year on the power play to put the Ridgebacks within one.
The majority of the second period went scoreless with goalies Emma Thompson (Hastings, Ont.) and Kanesa Shwetz making a number of saves, keeping the game at 2-1.
With less than four minutes left in the period, Guelph managed to score their third goal of the game to give the Gryphons a 3-1 lead. In the final period, Guelph would add two more goals for the four goal victory.
UOIT forced Guelph into a lot of penalties on the night as the Gryphons were called for minor infractions nine times, but the Ridgebacks would only capitalize once as they went 1-for-9 on the power play. Guelph was 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
Making her third start in four games, Thompson made 32 stops in net for the Ridgebacks. Shwetz stopped 25 UOIT shots to win her third game in as many starts.
UOIT (2-12-0) will have another weekend series at home as they take on the University of Windsor (5-8-0) on Saturday, November 29 at 7:30 p.m. and then host the University of Western Ontario (3-5-5) on Sunday, November 30 at 3:30 p.m.
