Rough start for the Ridgebacks on Western road trip

Men’s Hockey: Western defeated UOIT 9-4

London, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team gave up seven goals in the second period on Thursday night as they were defeated by the University of Western Ontario Mustangs 9-4 in the first of three consecutive road games.

After Jeremy Whelan (Pickering, Ont.) scored his first goal in a Ridgebacks uniform just five minutes into the game giving UOIT a 1-0 lead, it was all Western after that as they went on to score eight unanswered goals, seven of which were in the second period.

UOIT starting goalie Matt Mateja (Mississauga, Ont.), who made 17 stops in the first period, let in two goals in the first two minutes of the second stanza, causing the Ridgebacks to make a change in net as Nick Fontana (Whitby, Ont.) came in on relief. Different goalie, same result as Western would score six more goals to set an OUA season high nine goals in the game.

On a positive note for the Ridgebacks, UOIT did not give up as they scored the last two goals of the game, with Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.), Jason Fransky (Bancroft, Ont.) and Tony Rizzi (Kingston, Ont.) all finishing with three points apiece on the night.

Western’s power play was very efficient as they were 3-for-5 with the man advantage. UOIT went 1-for-3 on the power play while getting out shot 46-27.

UOIT will now meet up with the University of Waterloo on Friday night. It will be a rematch of last week’s match at the Campus Ice Centre where the Warriors escaped with a 3-2 overtime win.

UOIT’s next home action will be against Western on Thursday, December 4 at the Campus Ice Centre (7:30 p.m.). Students will have a chance to win a free trip to Montreal at the game!
