Ridgebacks lose a heartbreaker to Windsor

Women’s Hockey: Windsor defeated UOIT 5-4

Oshawa, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team came back from a three goal deficit in their game against the University of Windsor at the Campus Ice Centre, but fell just short of a win as they were defeated 5-4 on Saturday night.

Windsor jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with three goals in the first seven minutes of the game, making it look like they would cruise away with the win. UOIT had other thoughts though as they would score on a power play late in the period to cut the lead to 3-1. Assistant captain Chrissy Tereshyn (Scarborough, Ont.) scored the goal with an assists going to Jordan Whately (Cobourg, Ont.) and Katie Grant (Oshawa, Ont.). Whately was making her return to the lineup after suffering an injury early in the season.

In the second period, UOIT found themselves in penalty trouble as the Lancers were handed a 5-on-3 power play. Windsor would capitalize, as they scored at the 2:32 mark of the period to regain the three goal lead.

After the Windsor goal, it was all UOIT as they managed to turn things around. Rikki Palmateer (Cobourg, Ont.) scored at the 7:40 minute mark and Tereshyn netted her second of the night less than a minute later to cut the lead to 4-3. Tereshyn’s goal was impressive as she one-timed the puck past the Windsor keeper on a beautiful passes from Vanessa Johnstone (Niagara Falls, Ont.) on the fast break. The Ridgebacks played some of their best hockey of the season in the second period, as they controlled the flow of the game out shooting Windsor 13-8.

UOIT continued to work hard in the third period and it would pay off as Palmateer scored her second of the contest to tie things up at 4-4 with 16 minutes left on the clock. Three minutes later, UOIT caught an unlucky break as Windsor scored a goal to put them ahead by one.

With the Ridgebacks pressing for the tying goal, Windsor goalkeeper Celestine Manning stood on her head making a number of saves to preserve the win. Although they could not come up with the tying goal, UOIT outplayed Windsor once again in the period as they had a total of 15 shots in period, including a number of great scoring opportunities with the goalie pulled.

The blue and white can take a lot from the game on Saturday night as they outplayed the Lancers for the majority of the game. The final shot total would end up 35-30 in favour of the Ridgebacks.

UOIT is hoping to carry the momentum from their strong play as they challenge the University of Western Ontario Mustangs on Sunday, November 30 at 3:30 p.m. The Mustangs and Ridgebacks will square off at 3:30 p.m. at the Campus Ice Centre.
