Ridgebacks shutout by Western 1-0

Women’s Hockey: Western defeated UOIT 1-0

Oshawa, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team was narrowly defeated on Sunday in a defensive struggle as the Western Mustangs skated to a 1-0 victory at the Campus Ice Centre.

Both goalies were phenomenal as Western’s Lindsey Martin made 32 stops for the shutout victory while Emma Thompson (Hastings, Ont.) of UOIT made 38 stops in the losing effort.

It took 43 minutes and 20 seconds into the game for the first and only goal to be scored as Holly Ouellette from Western netted her fifth goal of the season. Both teams had plenty of chances to score but were unable to beat the goalkeepers. UOIT applied pressure down the stretch but came up empty on the scoresheet.

Both power plays were lacking punch in the game as the teams combined to go 0-for-13. Final shots would end up 39-32 in favour of Western.

UOIT will now take a break before heading into the 2009 portion of their schedule. The Ridgebacks next action will be against the Peterborough Ice Kats on January 2 at the Campus Ice Centre for an exhibition game. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m.
