Lakehead Wins the First of Back-to-Back Games Over UOIT

Men’s Hockey: Lakehead defeated UOIT 5-1

Oshawa, Ont. – The Ridgebacks looked good in fifty-seven minutes in their game against Lakehead University on Friday night but fell apart in the late stages of the game allowing the Thunderwolves to score three goals in the final three minutes as they defeated UOIT 5-1. Tonight’s game was the first of back-to-back games between the two teams as they will square off Saturday afternoon at the Campus Ice Centre at 3:30 p.m.

The Ridgebacks had a golden opportunity to tie the game at 2-2 with just over three minutes left in the game as they went on a power play. That is when Lakehead assistant captain and former Oshawa General Tobias Whelan stole the show as he scored two shorthanded goals in less than one minute to clinch the Thunderwolves to victory.

Lakehead outshot the Ridgebacks 51-32 in the game but both teams had a number of great scoring chances throughout the contest. Both power plays struggled on the night as Lakehead was 1-for-6 while UOIT was 0-for-7 with the man advantage.

Matt Mateja looked strong in net for UOIT turning away 46 shots in the game. The Mississauga native was holding a shutout midway through the second period despite having faced over thirty shots at that point of the game.

Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) picked up the lone goal for UOIT as he opened up scoring at the 8:49 minute mark of the second period. Defenseman TJ Legge (Chapleau, Ont.) picked up the assist on the play.

For UOIT, it was their first loss on home ice this season as they slipped to 2-3-1 in conference play. Lakehead improves to a 5-3-1 record.
