UOIT Shutout by #2 Ranked Team in Canada

Women’s Hockey – Laurier defeated UOIT 6-0

Kitchener, Ont. – Coming off a big win over Queen’s University last weekend, the UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team was in tough against the number two ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday night as they were shutout 6-0 on the road.

Laurier held a slim 1-0 lead after twenty minutes, but the Ridgebacks could not keep up their tight defensive play as the Hawks scored three goals in the second period and two more in the third to cruise to the 6-0 victory.

It was a much better effort for UOIT compared to their first meeting with the five time defending OUA champion Golden Hawks as they only took three penalties on the night compared to nine. Laurier was only penalized one time during tonight’s contest.

Laurier is undefeated this season with a 9-0 record, while goaltender Liz Knox has started all nine games enroute to picking up six shutouts. Laurier’s Kaley Powers and Abby Rainsberry are also one-two in league scoring as they have scored 14 and 12 points respectively this season.

UOIT (2-7-0) will look to turn things around tomorrow afternoon as they take on the Waterloo Warriors (4-4-1) in Waterloo.
