Crazy Game in Kingston - Shootout Needed to Decide Ridgebacks Season Opener
Men’s Hockey – RMC defeated UOIT 7-6 (SO)
Kingston, Ont. – It was a wild night for the UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team in their OUA season opener against RMC on Friday Night as the game featured five goalies and 13 goals. Trailing by four heading into the third period, the Ridgebacks stormed back with four goals to tie the game at 6-6. Despite the amazing comeback, the Ridgebacks could not squeak out a win as they defeated UOIT 7-6 in the shootout.
While outshooting the Paladins 30-18 in the first two periods, the Ridgebacks trailed in the game by four goals. At that point, head coach Marlin Muylaert made a goaltending change putting in Josh Sturrock (Dundalk, Ont.) in the game to replace starting goalie Matt Mateja (Mississauga, Ont.). The move sparked the Ridgebacks offense as they scored four third period goals in a span of two minutes to tie the game up at 6-6.
At this point of the game, things turned wacky. In an act of frustration after letting the lead go, the RMC goaltender shot the puck over the glass, resulting in an ejection from the game. Later in the period, the RMC back-up goalie suffered a game ending injury, leaving RMC without a netminder. The game was paused for a 15-minute break as a RMC skater strapped on the equipment to fill the void in the lineup. The move somehow worked out for RMC as they went in a defensive shell and the Ridgebacks could not score for the remainder of the game, including in the shootout.
Ridgebacks head coach Marlin Muylaert decribed the season opener as one of the craziest games he has been involved with in his career. "It is not very often you see five goalies play in a single game!'
Mike Noyes (Lucan, Ont.) made an impressive debut for the Ridgebacks scoring a hat-trick for UOIT. Derrick Bagshaw (Oshawa, Ont.) also had a great game scoring two goals in the third period to lead the Ridgebacks charge.
UOIT will now head across town to take on the Queen’s Gaels on Saturday afternoon. The Ridgebacks home opener will be on Friday, October 17 vs. the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. Puck drop for the big night at the Campus Ice Centre is 7:30 p.m.
