Golden Hawks Shutout the Ridgebacks

Women’s Hockey – Wilfrid Laurier defeated UOIT 9-0

Oshawa, Ont. – Playing against the nationally third ranked Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks on Sunday, the UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey came up empty as they were defeated by a score of 9-0 at the Campus Ice Centre.

Laurier has been the top team in Ontario for the past decade as they have skated away with seven of the last ten OUA championships, including winning the past five.

In Sunday’s contest, Kaley Powers scored a hat trick and added two assists to rack up five points. Teammate Abby Rainsberry also picked up five points in the win as she recorded five assists. Powers and Rainsberry sit one-two in the OUA leading scoring race having registered 11 and 10 points respectively.

Penalties were once again an issue for the Ridgebacks as they allowed Laurier to score three power play goals on nine attempts. After coming in relief midway through the second period, UOIT netminder Emma Thompson looked impressive (Hastings, Ont.) making 30 saves.

Laurier remains perfect on the year as they increase their record to 6-0 while the Ridgebacks fall to 1-6 to start the season. UOIT will now take on the Queen’s Gaels (4-2) on Saturday, November 1 at the Campus Ice Centre for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
