Ridgebacks Drop Season Opener to Windsor

Women’s Hockey – Windsor defeated UOIT 3-0

Windsor, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team put up a good fight in their 2008-09 OUA season debut but fell short as the University of Windsor Lancers came up with a 3-0 win on Saturday.

The Ridgebacks came out flying in the first period and had a number of scoring opportunities including two breakaways but Windsor goalkeeper Jamie Tessier was up to the test as the teams would play to an 0-0 draw after one.

The teams remained tied for the majority of the second frame until fourth year veteran Darris Ford opened up scoring at 14:17 off a turnover to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead. Less then two minutes later, Windsor would add a power play marker to give them a two goal lead heading into the final period.

Early in the third period, UOIT was given a golden opportunity to get back into the game as Windsor was called for too-many men on the ice. Darris Ford spoiled their plan as she netted her second goal of the game to put the game on ice.

Freshman Emma Thompson (Hastings, Ont.), who made her debut in net for UOIT stopped 33 shots in the losing effort. The Lancers would outshoot UOIT 36-21.

UOIT will look to rebound on Sunday as they take on the Western Mustangs at 2 p.m. Western was shutout 4-0 by Queen’s in action today.

The team will then prepare for their home opener set to take place on Friday, October 10 against the Brock Badgers. Puck drop for the big game at the Campus Ice Centre is at 7:30 p.m.

Interesting Note: Four of five OUA women’s hockey games today ended in a shutout.
