UOIT Women’s Hockey Drop a 2-0 Decision to Western

Women’s Hockey – Western defeated UOIT 2-0

London, Ont. – Despite another strong effort by the UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team, the result was still the same as they were defeated by the University of Western Ontario Mustangs 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The Ridgebacks coaching staff was pleased with the team’s effort throughout the entire game, but a couple of bad bounces and a steady performance by Western’s goalkeeper Jessica Ulrich prevented UOIT from getting their first goal of the regular season.

Both teams had plenty of opportunities in the first period as the team’s combined for 24 total shots, but it was Western’s Ellie Seedhouse who scored at the 13:54 mark to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.

After the Ridgebacks ran into penalty trouble in the second period, the Mustang’s scored their second goal of the game as defenceman Veronica Johnston netted her first goal of the year. Seedhouse, who was named the games first star, picked up an assist on the play. The two goals were all Western would need s they would gallop off with the victory.

Carleigh Taggart (Whitby, Ont.) started in net for the Ridgebacks making 30 stops in the losing effort. The second year netminder was named the second star of the game. Both teams had nine power play opportunities, with Western scoring one goal with the man advantage.

With two close games on a Western Ontario roadtrip, the Ridgebacks are taking the right direction on becoming a conteder in the OUA.

The Ridgebacks will now look ahead to Friday, October 10 as they will take on the Brock Badgers in their 2008-09 home opener! Puck drop at the Campus Ice Centre is at 7:30 p.m.
