The Ridgebacks are Back and Win in an OT Thriller
Men’s Hockey: UOIT defeated Ryerson 6-5 (OT)
Oshawa, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team made quite an impression in front of the hometown crowd on Friday night as they opened their 2008-09 season up with a 6-5 overtime victory over the Ryerson Rams in an exhibition game.
For head coach Marlin Muylaert, it was a great opportunity to gauge where his team is sitting heading into the Ridgebacks second season of play in the OUA. The victory is defiantly a positive for UOIT as last year, the team dropped a 6-1 decision to the Rams early in the regular season.
The power play was clicking for the Ridgebacks on the night as they scored four goals with the man advantage. During the regular season in 2007-08, the Ridgebacks only managed four power play makers all season.
Although there were plenty of new faces in the lineup, it was the veterans making an impact on the scoresheet. Dustin Turner (Charlottetown, PEI) and Derrick Bagshaw (Oshawa, Ont.) scored two goals apiece while Brent Varty (Oshawa, Ont.) added three helpers.
The Ridgebacks will head to York University next weekend for the York Invitational Tournament. UOIT’s much anticipated home opener is scheduled for Friday, October 17 against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues at the Campus Ice Centre. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m.
Season tickets are still available at early bird pricing. For more information, please call 905-721-8668 Ext. 2784.
