Shootout Needed to Decide Ridgebacks/Stingers Game

Women’s Hockey – Concordia defeated UOIT 2-1 (SO)

St. Catharines, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team continued to look impressive at the 2nd Annual Brock University Exhibition Tournament as a shootout was needed to decide the outcome of their game against Concordia University. In the end, it was the Stingers coming out with the victory, winning by a final score of 2-1.

The first two periods of the game were very chippy with both squads taking a number of penalties. Even though there were a number of scoring opportunities, the teams skated into the third period scoreless.

Midway through the third period, UOIT managed to get on the board first as Katie Grant (Oshawa, Ont.) netted her second goal in as many games as she deflected a Megan Friel (Pickering, Ont.) point shot to put the Ridgebacks up 1-0. Grant is looking great early in the season scoring twice for the Ridgebacks.

Pressing for the tie, the Stingers caught a break with seven minutes left in the game as they beat UOIT goalie Carleigh Taggart (Oshawa, Ont.) on a scramble in front of the net. The teams would remain tied for the final minutes of regulation time.

Four-on-four overtime action proved to be very exciting, but the tie could still not be broken. In the shootout, Ridgeback skaters Breanne Hadley (Belleville, Ont.), Melissa Findlay (Oshawa, Ont.) and Jackie McArthur (Oshawa, Ont.) were all stopped on their attempts while Concordia’s second shooter was able to beat Taggart and seal up the win for the Stingers. This is the first year the shootout will be used to break a tie in OUA women’s hockey.

The Ridgebacks outshoot the Stingers 34-25 in the game. Concordia finishes the exhibition tournament with a 2-0 record after defeating Queen’s University 2-1 on Saturday. The Ridgebacks finish with a 0-1-0-1 record, but can take a lot of positives out of their play losing by only one goal.
