Ridgebacks host the inaugural Athletic/Academic Awards Luncheon

OSHAWA, Ont. – The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) athletic department hosted the inaugural Athletic/Academic Awards Luncheon at the Student Centre on Tuesday afternoon. Student-athletes, friends, family, coaches, faculty and staff were on hand as the department honoured the student-athletes for their academic achievements in 2009/10.

The UOIT Scholastic Award was presented to men’s hockey players John McCullough (Barrie, Ont.) and Nathan Spaling (Drayton, Ont.) as well as women’s hockey assistant captain Chrissy Tereshyn (Scarborough, Ont.) for having the top overall GPA of all varsity student-athletes. This marks the second straight year that Spaling and Tereshyn received this award for outstanding academics.

“We are extremely proud of all of our award winners today,” said Ken Babcock, Director of Athletics. “Recognizing the students for their academic achievements is important and the amount of recipients reflects how our student-athletes at UOIT strive for success in the classroom and their respective sports.”

Overall UOIT student-athletes earned 21 All-Academic awards honouring their outstanding accomplishments in the classroom and in athletics.

The 4th annual UOIT athletic banquet will be taking place Thursday, April 8 at the General W. Sikorski Polish Veterans Association Hall in Oshawa, Ont.
