UOIT pounds Brock 8-0 at the Campus Ice Centre

Men’s Hockey: UOIT defeated Brock 8-0

OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team came up with a big win on Tuesday night as they shutout the Brock Badgers 8-0 at the Campus Ice Centre.

The win marks the Ridgebacks largest margin of victory in program history, as well as Jason Guy’s (Whitby, Ont.) first shutout in the OUA.

UOIT led from start to finish on Tuesday night, as Brent Varty (Oshawa, Ont.) scored the opening goal just two minutes into the game. Despite being outshot 15-7 in the period, the Ridgebacks held a 2-0 lead into the break, as Chris McGuffin (St. Thomas, Ont.) scored at the 8:34 minute mark giving the Ridgebacks a two goal lead with his first OUA goal.

UOIT took complete control of the game with three goals in the second period, while Guy and the Ridgebacks defence kept the Badgers off the scoreboard.

Trailing 5-0 heading into the third period, Brock looked to reverse their fortune pulling starting goalie Mark Yetman in favour of Jordan Bent. The Ridgebacks welcomed Bent with a power play marker just seven seconds into the period, taking a commanding 6-0 lead. The Ridgebacks would score two more goals in the third, going on to pick up the 8-0 victory.

UOIT pounded the Badgers over the final 20 minutes, out shooting Brock 22-3 in the third period. The Ridgebacks out shot Brock 39-26 overall.

In total, Guy made 26 stops for his first shutout of the season, and the Ridgebacks second in program history. Guy is ranked fourth in OUA total saves with 402 on the year. Yetman of the Badgers finished the night stopping 12 of 17 shots, while Bent made 19 of 22 saves coming on in relief.

Dustin Turner (Charlottetown, PEI) and Tony Rizzi (Kingston, Ont.) each tied the Ridgebacks record for most points in a game with four on the night. Nathan Spaling (Drayton, Ont.) had also tied the record earlier this season with a four point performance against the Badgers on November 4, 2009 in a Ridgebacks 6-4 victory. Spaling finished with a goal and an assist on Tuesday night.

Kyle Wetering, (Pickering, Ont.) and Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) ended up with a goal and an assist in the win.

As they have been all season, the special team units were effective as the Ridgebacks power play went 2-for-7 while the Badgers were shutout on six attempts with the man advantage. The Ridgebacks are ranked fourth on the power play and seventh shorthanded.

UOIT is 6-8-1 on the year, trailing Guelph (6-7-2), Windsor (6-7-2) and Brock (7-9-0) by just one point in the standings. York (7-7-1) is in fifth place in the western conference, two points ahead of the Ridgebacks.

With the win, UOIT wins the season series over Brock 2-1-0 for the second straight year. UOIT is 4-5-0 all time against the Badgers.

The Ridgebacks wrap up the 2009 portion of their schedule on Friday, December 4 against the nationally ranked Laurier Golden Hawks. Game time at the Campus Ice Centre is at 7:30 p.m.
